A customer wanted to update their laundry room to improve its function and look. We talked about their vision, needs and expectations for the project. They ultimately decided to replace their old wire shelves with built-in cabinets for the upper area and install a large flat “folding area” shelf right above the washer/dryer. The upper cabinets were painted and have adjustable shelves inside for flexibility. They wanted an area for hangers as well, but did not need a large area or want to sacrifice too much room. We decided that a 36″ bar between the vertical cabinet and the wall was perfect. The large flat folding area above the washer/dryer is stained Knotty Alder with a clear matte finish, as the customer really likes the natural wood look. In order to maintain serviceability of the washer and dryer, the shelf is supported on each side and includes cross members underneath the span for strength. The entire shelf can easily be removed if needed. The contrasting colors between the stained wood and light cabinets strike a great balance. The customer will be painting the walls a different color to further enhance the look at a later date.
