Graduation Bookshelf/Bookcase

When my niece graduated high school, I asked her to think of something that she might like for me to build for her as our graduation gift. She had something in mind, and provided a rough concept drawing. As she is an avid reader, her idea was a set of bookshelves behind a bookcase. Here was her rough sketch:

I reviewed her diagrams and we discussed what she was after, then I drew up some plans of my own to solidify the concept in my head. We discussed wood types and I showed her some samples of different woods, colors and finishes. She decided on a Knotty Alder wood, a Walnut stain and a satin polyurethane finish for durability. The front shelves are sized and spaced for paperbacks and are fastened to full extension ball-bearing drawer slides. The the back bookcase feature pins and the shelf spacing is adjustable to fit the needs for sizing. Final size is 48″ wide, 54″ high and 18″ deep.
